Book Review: A Winter’s Wedding by Sharon Owens

Posted on Friday, November 12th, 2010 by Leah

Emily loves Dylan. And Dylan loves Emily. Their relationship is rock solid. Everyone says they are meant to be together, it’s just a matter of when - not if - Dylan’s going to pop the Big Question. There’s just one tiny fly in the ointment: Emily hates weddings. Which is fair enough seeing as she was jilted at the altar years ago by Alex, her supposed soulmate. Still, Dylan isn’t Alex.

He’s gorgeous and sexy and scruffy and kind - and more than worth taking a chance on …But what happens when the ghost of Emily’s Christmas past threatens to ruin everything? Can Dylan convince the love of his life he’s different and that their wedding day will be remembered for the right reasons? After all, with a sprinkling of snow and a touch of magic in the air, there’s nothing quite like a winter’s wedding to warm the soul...

Chick Lit Classic: Cat by Freya North

Posted on Thursday, November 11th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Lit Classics is a regular feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!

This week I have picked a book that was one of the first chicklit reads I ever read myself. I actually remember going to WH Smith with my book token and picking this out for myself excitedly, sure it was going to be a great read. Freya North is great writer who has created a family of girls who get a book of their own with their name, such as Cat, and each of the books follows one girl. This book follows Cat as she is a journalist on the Tour de France and it certainly makes for interesting reading! There are a few rude bits, but the story telling is great, and I loved it! I have read the other McCabe sisters books, and they are all just as good, so ones to look out for if you haven’t read them yet!

“Cat McCabe is 29 and the youngest of three sisters brought up by their Uncle Django-a man with unusual culinary tastes (“I made pizza tonight,” Django says proudly. “I had some bread that was going a bit off so I tore it up, added a little oil and beaten egg and a drop of ketchup, formed it into a base and baked the bugger. I added a topping of sardines, chicken liver, a little more ketchup and some Stilton.”)-after their mother ran off with a cowboy from Denver.

A budding sports journalist obsessed with cycling, she’s just been offered the chance of a lifetime-covering the Tour de France for the Guardian. But she’s a little on the fragile side, having been dumped by her boyfriend of five years, and thus lost loads of weight and self-confidence. How will this English version of Ally McBeal survive the testosterone-fuelled cycling race? Will she succumb to the muscular thighs and obvious bulges of the sexy cyclists-and they to her slim English gorgeousness? How will she cope as one of only 12 women in the thousand-strong press corps? Will her Ex show up? Will he want her back? Does she want him back? And what about Ben York-team doctor for Megapac, the American outsiders? He seems to be flirting with her, and there’s definitely Chemistry. But if he’s after Cat, why was he looking deep into the eyes of Monique, the stunning Coca Cola podium girl? And, when the three gruelling weeks are over, will Cat get the features editorship she craves at Maillot magazine?”

    Author Interview: Anna McPartlin

Posted on Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 by Leah

At the beginning of this year, I read a book that pretty much blew me away, Pack Up The Moon by Anna McPartlin, it was a stunning work of fiction and when I got the chance to review her latest novel The One I Love (published in Ireland as So What If I’m Broken and in the US as Alexandra, Gone) I was hoping for a similar read and I got it. I then got the chance to interview Anna, and it’s definitely one of my favourite interviews. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. Tell us about your latest novel The One I Love (which was released in Ireland under the title of So What If I’m Broken and in the US under the title of Alexandra, Gone).

Alexandra Kavanagh vanishes and ‘The One I Love’ is about the people she leaves behind.

The story of a missing woman came from my preoccupation with the disappearance of little Maddie McCann. I wanted to explore the ordinary everyday lives of people who are close to or touched by an extraordinary and dreadful loss. It’s also about the strength and weakness, pain and joy that comes with being emotionally invested in family and friends.

    2. Are you currently working on a new novel - I hope you say yes - can you tell us anything about it?

I’m actually currently working on a TV pilot for a paranormal investigation comedy/drama series. But as soon as the idea is pitched I’ll be researching and writing my next book. I can’t say too much because it’s early days but part of my research involves a trip to a township in Africa and volunteering in a rehabilitation hospital in Dublin. Sounds depressing but don’t worry there will be plenty of smiles along the way.

Chick Flick Tuesday: Music and Lyrics

Posted on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

Good old Hugh Grant. You see his name against a film and you pretty much know it’s going to be a chick flick, don’t you?! This week I’ve picked one of his more recent movies for Chick Flick Tuesday, Music and Lyrics. It stars Hugh and the lovely Drew Barrymore, and the two make a great partnership. This film is really funny because Hugh has to sing, and his role is as a former pop star so there are really laugh out loud moments. There are some nice songs in here too, so there’s something for everyone! It’s not his best film, but he has a good chemistry with the lovely Drew, and overall it is a fun watch!

“Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former ’80s pop idol who turns down an offer to appear on a reality TV show for has-beens. Instead, he chooses to play the far more dignified nostalgia circuit, and hires the lovely but deeply insecure Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) to water his plants while he’s away. When Alex is tasked with writing a song for pop starlet Cora (Haley Bennett) in just four days, Sophie reveals herself to be a gifted songwriter and they end up making beautiful music together. Despite this contrived set-up, the film, to its credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com clichés in favour of organic, character-driven conflicts and comedic situations. As Alex and Sophie fall in love, their relationship begins to mirror the song writing process; they grapple with their creative differences and emotional hang-ups, all the while dealing with the pressures of the music industry.”

Her debut novel is only out at the end of this month (November), but already Ali McNamara has signed a new book deal with publishers Little, Brown for further books after the release of From Notting Hill with Love… Actually! Leah and I both absolutely adored Ali’s debut novel and we are sure that she is going to become a huge success within the chicklit, she certainly deserves to be! Well done Ali!
