In our most recent newsletter a typo was made concerning our new Industry Interview feature - we rather accidentally typed it as Insider Industry Interview (which Novelicious appears to use) which appears to have caused a minor argument. The accusations that have flown have been mildly insulting - that we stole not only the name, but also the format of the interview. I would now like to clear up that we did not steal the name, that was merely a typo in the newsletter and also all of our interviews - author and industry - use the same format and that is something we have been doing since the beginning of the website. It was also bandied about that we stole the idea for the interviews but I assure you, I am perfectly capable of thinking up my own ideas and the Insider Interviews are something I have been wanting to start since last year, but only got around to posting in the New Year. I would have assumed that had any of our interviewees been interviewed by Novelicious, they would have declined our offer and stated why they couldn’t be interviewed by us, however none have brought the issue up and have happily agreed to interviews with us.
I find it mildly insulting that Novelicious took to Twitter to try and shame us - no names were mentioned but no names were needed, because really, how many chick lit blogs are out there? To accuse us - in front of many of our readers, no less - of stealing and what not before actually asking those on Twitter to help out [on how to deal with people who steal] really annoyed both Chloe and myself and some email exchanges were inevitably made - it was then alleged our emails were - ahem - “abusive”, again a false accusation, they were nothing of the sort. The only way Novelicious can accuse us of stealing her idea is if she had copyrighted the term and, as far as I am aware, that is not something she has done therefore we have done nothing wrong whatsoever.
I will not in any way shape or form have my website questioned by anybody. The fact is many book blogs are run the same way and just because I thought of an idea does not mean I stole it. We have run author interviews since the site started so it seemed logical that with so many different publishing people on our contact list that I would like to talk to them about what it’s like to work in an industry I adore. It’s hardly an imaginative leap, nor is it something I would need to steal in order to come up with.
I only write this post to clear up the fact that we have never stolen anything and the claims against us are false. Both Chloe and I work very hard on this website to make it the best it can be and to have somebody come along and accuse us of things is very annoying and, above all, wrong. The words mountain and molehill spring to mind with this matter and I hope it’s hereby closed. I did not start this website to get into petty little arguments and, to be honest, things like this take the shine out of blogging.
Thank you,
Leah & Chloe
