Top 7 tips for renting a car in Australia

Getting around Australia by car is a lot easier than people realise. Renting a car is also pretty straightforward, and in these big spaces, being mobile is a good idea.

The rental process is very efficient, but you need to know:

  1. Age restrictions may apply. Generally, 21 is the minimum age.
  2. American and European licenses are OK, but other licenses may require translation.
  3. The type of car really matters. If you’re driving in the city, a hatch will do. For the bush or a long range drive like the Great Ocean Road tours, you need a four wheel drive, and a good one.
  4. You need your ID as well as your rental papers to pick up your car. Photo ID like a passport is preferred.
  5. You’ll probably get a stick shift unless you specify otherwise, although automatics are quite common.
  6. Australian cars are right hand drive.
  7. In Australia, you drive on the left!

Do some research and check out the cars available. You won’t get a bomb, but you can usually get a good new car pretty easily.
