Improving VOIP quality, and some dos and don’ts

VOIP quality varies a lot. Sometimes it’s you, sometimes it’s the service, sometimes it’s your hardware.

To improve VOIP quality:

Make sure your computer or mobile device has the connection speed to manage HD streaming. Some older equipment simply can’t do this.

Wireless routers can be fussy. Just being in the wrong position can cause problems. Ideally, the router should be on the wall, free from obstruction. Check your graphics to see signal strength.

Don’t make simultaneous multiple calls on the same network. It’s not “multi-tasking” in this sense, it’s using up your bandwidth!

Downloads can make a real mess of a VOIP call, because the call and the download are competing with each other. On principle, pause the download before you make the call.

System issues- Does anything look unusual? Do you have too many browser tabs open? Are you running music or something else which can interfere with the VOIP sound and picture? Don’t!

Always look for the obvious issues. Your VOIP will be fine!
